Jameos del Agua
The name of this attraction - Jameos del Agua – describes what it is. Jameo, the ancient word for holes in the cavern roof; agua, the water of two natural lakes inside the lava tunnels.
But the name fails to capture the blend of art and nature that was created here by artist and architect Cesar Manrique, whose conservationist work made him a Lanzarote legend.
Climb down a stylish spiral staircase to a café-bar. Delve deeper to a small lake fed by the Atlantic. It is home to tiny albino crabs that have become the symbol of the attraction.
There are paths and stairways to a kidney-shaped swimming pool, an auditorium and dance floor. There are green plants, flowers and a palm tree believed to be 100 years old. Hollywood film star Rita Hayworth apparently described it as “the eighth wonder of the world”.
