Best Time to Visit Alonissos

There are at least a dozen beaches tucked away on this gorgeous little island and the Mediterranean climate means there is lots of sunshine to ensure you can enjoy the beautiful warm sea throughout the long summer.

From June to September visitors can expect at least 10 hours of sunshine every day and in July and August the average temperature is between 25 and 30 degrees Centigrade.

The island welcomes competitors for the international Alonissos Challenge in June.  There are 30km and 10km runs for adults, a 2km race for children and a 15km trek for walkers.

In July there is a fisherman’s night; a street party after the name day ceremony for patron saint of Patitiri, Agia Pareskevi, on July 26; a threshing festival in Chora which demonstrates how in the old days it was done with the help of mules.

August 15th is a big festival for the name day of the Virgin Mary. Chora hosts the celebrations which involve church services and wreath laying at the war memorial. In the evening the re-creation of a traditional wedding is followed by food, drink and live music. The party goes into the night.

Alonissos Travel Advice

Boat: It is the main mode of transportation in the island. A fleet of water taxis serves the main beaches, with larger boats sailing around Alonissos and further north to the deserted islands of the Marine Park.

Bus: There is a bus service between Patitiri and the Old Town from June to September when the schools are closed, ranging from four buses daily to nine or twelve in the high season. The bus also goes to the port of Steni Vala.

Taxi: There are only a few taxis in Alonissos but other modes of transport are cheaper and easier to find.

Bicycle: Renting a bike during your Alonissos holidays is a wonderful way of getting around and great way to see the island, however the island is quite steep so you'll need to be quite fit.

It’s possible to rent cars, mopeds and scooters in Patitiri and there is an asphalt road that links the capital with charming Chora, the old capital, the small port of Steni Vala and some of the beaches. There are other roads better suited to 4x4s.
