Afissos at a glance

A large seaside village with a vibrant yet traditional atmosphere, Afissos is a brilliant holiday spot to blend activity with laid-back Greek living. The promenade is the hub of life here, set slightly higher than the water so you can enjoy the entrancing views. There are three beaches to choose from – Ampovo, Lagoudi and Kallifteri – with yet more hideaway beach spots to be discovered off the coastal path between Afissos and Lefokastro.

Afissos is a place where you can find your own peaceful spot of heaven if you want it, or immerse yourself in the vibrancy of village life. This is a locality of antiquated stone houses and towering mansions, which are the former homes of olive and silk merchants. Nowadays, there are plentiful beach bars, coffee spots and tavernas to choose from, as well as handful of souvenir shops selling locally crafted products.

While there is plenty going on in Afissos to wend away tranquil days, the village’s location half way along the Pelion peninsula coastline also makes it an excellent place to explore many other places in the region. From quaint villages and tucked away beaches, to walks and hikes on the slopes of Mount Pelion itself, there is plenty at your doorstep when you stay in Afissos. The small city of Volos is just 15 miles up the coastline too, if you want to do more sightseeing, visit the marina restaurants, or embark on boating day trips.

Best time to visit

Afissos enjoys a relatively mild climate all year round, with average highs of 25 C in July and August, and lows of around 10 C from December to February.

During July and August, various festivals tend to take place in Afissos. Called ‘Argonautica’, these festivals celebrate the mythological story that Jason and the Argonauts stopped off in Afissos to stock up on water.

Travel advice

Buses: There is a bus route from Afissos to Volos, enabling you to get into the city easily. Volos has bus routes to all the key villages in the Pelion peninsula, so it is possible to explore a number of places in the region by bus.

Car rental: Hiring a car is a brilliant way discover many of the other villages in the Pelion peninsula. It’s best to hire a car either on arrival at the airport, or from a car rental office in Volos.

Taxi: There are various taxi companies in the area surrounding Afissos. Either ask your hotel to book you a taxi, or contact a local taxi company directly.
