Skopelos Travel Advice

By Bus: Skopelos is reasonably well served by public bus. There are four routes. Buses run the main route every half-hour in the high season beginning in Skopelos Town and making stops at Stafylos, Agnondas, Panormos, the Adrina Beach Hotel, Milia, Elios, Klima, Glossa, and Loutraki. The fare from Skopelos to Glossa is about 2 Euros.

By Taxi: Taxis will provide service to almost any place on the island. They are not metered so negotiate the fare before accepting a ride. A typical fare, from Skopelos to Glossa is around 25 Euros.

By Boat: To visit the more isolated beaches, take one of the large excursion boats. Excursion boats to Glisteri, Glyfoneri, and Sarres beaches operate only in peak season. From the port of Agnondas, on the south coast, there are fishing boats to Limnonari, one of the island's better beaches.

How do I get to Skopelos from the UK?

There are no airports on Skopelos island, so the best way to travel there from the UK is by first flying to the neighbouring island of Skiathos. There are ferries that operate everyday between Skopelos and Skiathos.

Many visitors split their time between the two islands, enjoying the sights of two different Greek destinations all in one holiday. We recommend booking an island hopping package to make it easier to enjoy more destinations without needing to worry about any of the planning or logistics.

Can I take a direct ferry to Skopelos from mainland Greece?

Yes, you can take a ferry to Skopelos from various mainland ports in Greece including Volos, Mantoudi, Agios Konstantinos and Thessaloniki.

Is Skopelos a good base for island hopping?

Yes, Skopelos is a fantastic island hopping base with so many other nearby locations to explore including Alonissos, Skiathos, and mainland Greece.

Is it better to stay in Skopelos Town or a beach resort?

It depends on your priorities.

If you would like to be closer to shops, restaurants and bars, booking accommodation directly in the centre of Skopelos Town would be a better choice for you.

If you would prefer to be located somewhere more quiet and tranquil, booking further from the centre of town might be better for you.

Do I need a car to explore Skopelos?

While you can definitely enjoy Skopelos without a car, you will want one if you'd like to travel to all of Skopelos' most beautiful beaches. The beaches are spread out across the island and are not walking distance from Skopelos Town, so some form of transportation will need to be arranged.

It is cheapest to book a car yourself instead of arranging taxis throughout your trip. A car can be rented from about £12 a day depending on the season, car size and length of hire.

What month is best to go to Skopelos?

The most popular time to go to Skopelos is July and August.

If you are looking to enjoy weather warm enough for swimming in the lovely Aegean Sea every day, avoid booking your Skopelos Holiday for the shoulder seasons of January to April, and October to December.

If you don't mind cooler water or are more interested in sightseeing than swimming, the shoulder seasons are perfect for taking advantage of lower prices and less crowds.

The days will begin to really warm up in April and will be lovely for swimming by May.

June to August can be very hot in Skopelos, with highs sometimes reaching 37 degrees.

September is a nice time to book your holiday to Skopelos, with slightly lower prices and lovely warm weather. You can also avoid more of the tourist crowds after school holiday season.

Is Skopelos a party island?

Skopelos is not known for being a "party island" but there is plenty of lively nightlife to be found (concentrated mainly in Skopelos Town) if you are seeking it.

How many days do you need in Skopelos?

A good amount of time to spend on Skopelos is 5-7 days. This allows for time to explore the island and to visit all of the well known idyllic beaches and still have time for strolls through Skopelos Town.

Many visitors split their holiday between two or three islands, visiting Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos. If visiting three or more islands, this is best done between 7-14 days.

Are there sandy beaches in Skopelos?

Yes, some of its beaches have a mixture of pebbles and sand, but there are also fine sandy beaches to be found on the island.

Stafylos beach, for example is one of the finer beaches. Kastani Beach is also extremely popular with its lovely sand and sunbeds available for hire.

Other examples of beaches with more sand are Limnonari, Milia and Velanio.
