Kos - 3 nights

Kos first. The harbour in Kos Town greets you with bobbing yachts and multi-coloured fishing boats. The streets are full of lively cafes, bars, shops and even a medieval knights’ castle.  This family-friendly island has one of the biggest water parks in Greece and its varied history means that ancient ruins mingle with the ice cream parlours and tavernas. It’s great for cyclists. It’s as easy to hire a bike as a car to explore an island with masses to see and do. Look for Hippocrates’ plane tree, a great picture opportunity of an ancient tree. But is it really the one the Father of Medicine sat under 2,400 years ago?

Kalymnos - 4 nights

Kalymnos' colourful main town, Pothia, clusters around a picturesque harbour. The island was once the sponge-diving centre of Greece. Now rugged mountains attract rock climbers from around the world. Hiking and scuba diving are also popular.  But many choose to take life easy and enjoy the quiet beaches, pretty villages and scenic countryside packed into the beautiful, 12-mile long island. And the mermaid? She’s a large bronze statue in Pothia harbour.
