Mount Athos
One of the most unique places in Greece — a self-governed monastic peninsula on the eastern “finger” of Halkidiki, officially called the “Autonomous Monastic State of the Holy Mountain.”
What makes Mount Athos special
- UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Around 20 Eastern Orthodox monasteries
- Byzantine architecture, ancient manuscripts, and dramatic coastal scenery
- Active monastic community with traditions dating back over 1,000 years
The atmosphere is very different from the beach resorts elsewhere in Halkidiki — quiet, spiritual, and heavily protected.
Important visitor rules
Women cannot enter
Access to the peninsula itself is restricted to men only, a rule known as the “Avaton.”
Men need a permit
Male visitors must obtain a special entry permit (“Diamonitirion”) in advance. Daily visitor numbers are limited.
