Things to do in Lanzarote

Cueva de los Verdes

The six kilometres of lava tubes beneath Lanzarote are one of the longest volcanic tunnels in the world. History books say that the villagers hid there when pirates invaded. Now they are home to two very different tourist attractions.

The Cueva de los Verdes, or Green Caves, is a pathway through two kilometres of the caves that have been subtly lit to reveal an array of natural colours in the walls and weird stalactites of solidified lava. The guided tours take about an hour and include narrow and dark sections and steps.

You can’t miss the large auditorium halfway through – sometimes used as a concert hall - and there’s a breath-taking surprise at the end, but visitors are urged to keep it a secret.
